SBS Friction, part of Brembo Group and the leading manufacturer of OEM and Aftermarket brake components for motorcycles, ATVs and SxS vehicles, has given its brake pads a new life – not on the racetrack, but as a work of arts.
In collaboration with renowned artist Kristian von Hornsleth, SBS Friction has created Rallentaria, a sculpture whose name – Italian for “to slow down” – perfectly reflects the expression of the work.
It is shaped like a wheel and made from discarded brake pads, combining design known from Italian motorcycles with the explosive element of speed on the racetrack.
For SBS Friction, the project goes beyond art. It is a statement.
Thomas Midtgaard-Jørgensen, SBS Friction Marketing & Product Manager and the conceptualiser behind the project at SBS shares: "As a company, we have a responsibility to think differently – even when it comes to things we would normally throw away as scrap. When new machinery is put into operation, scrap naturally occurs. Instead of just throwing it away, we wanted to create something that could make a difference. Motorcyclists are often seen as strong and mythical types – but cancer strikes even the strongest in society, regardless of whether you wear a leather vest or not. The entire team at SBS – all employees – have put their hearts and souls into this project with great passion, and we hope that the sculpture can raise a lot of money for the fight against the disease."
Kristian von Hornsleth shares his perspective: "The brake pads are safety – the motorcycle is freedom. The sculpture is a tribute to that very contrast. I hope the buyer feels that sense of rush in the artwork, just like on a motorcycle, but also remembers the importance of stopping every now and then – just like in life."
The sculpture will be auctioned during Knæk Cancer weeks from October 1st to 24th, 2025, on a certified platform, which can be accessed here.
Commission fees will be minimized to ensure that the maximum proceeds support cancer research, treatment, and related charities chosen by SBS Friction employees.
